Sherrell A. Overton
HBA Life Member May 8, 2004
October 11, 1948 - January 5, 2007
On January 5, 2007, at the age of 58, our Lord welcomed our precious angel, Sherrell Ann Overton, into heaven after a courageous two year fight with cancer.
Sherrell loved her family dearly and fought to the very end waiting until everyone that she loved was present to take part in her passing.
She was born in Wharton, Texas on October 11, 1948, and is survived by her husband, Carl R. Overton, just a few days short of 19 years, son Chris Goodrow, granddaughter Megan Goodrow, all from Huntsville. She also leaves behind her mom and dad Viola Varner and Capt. Doyle R. Varner Sr., a close sister and brother-in-law Debbie and Joe Mendez, brother and sister-in-law Doyle and Tracy Varner, all of Houston; nieces, Nikki Mendez of Dallas; Jenny Varner of Houston; three nephews, Matthew Mendez, Russell Varner and Jesse Varner of Houston; in-laws Patti and Tim Vencel, Robert and Sue Overton both of Terre Haute, IN and Diana and Jay Keough of Huntsville, Texas; numerous aunts, uncle, cousins and friends.
Sherrell was a graduate of Bellaire High School in Houston. She continued her education at Sam Houston State University where she fell in love with the friendly people and town of Huntsville. She made Huntsville her home and began working full time for SHSU where she became a loyal employee of thirty-two years as an administrative assistant for the Sam Houston Press.
She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 95 in Huntsville and an avid bowler.
In May 2004 Sherrell became the fourth Life Member of the Huntsville Bowling Association for her service beginning as Secretary of the 1984-85 Sunday Night Mixed league, numerous terms as officer of the Huntsville Womens Bowling Association, association delegate, league delegate and Secretary of the Hits & Splits league for 23 years of continuous service.
She was a true Huntsville Hornet fan and it brought her great joy to go watch the games with her husband Carl. Sherrell loved her family, friends, job and town and continued to show each of us how to live each day to the fullest. On her life journey she also taught us the meaning of true friendship. She would enjoy nothing more than being with friends at the Olive Garden, Red Lobster, bowling lanes or playing bingo.
Her positive attitude towards life is her legacy to those who loved her dearly.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the American Cancer Society Research, in remembrance of Sherrell Overton.
